Vayetze “And He Went Out”

Reader 1 (Evening Portion)

Gen 28:10 And Ya’akov went out from Be’er-sheva, and went toward Haran.
Gen 28:11 And he lighted upon a certain place, and tarried there all night, because the sun was
set; and he took of the stones of that place, and put them for his pillows, and lay down in
that place to sleep.
Gen 28:12 And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to
heaven: and behold the angels of Elohim ascending and descending on it.
Gen 28:13 And, behold, YHWH stood above it, and said, I am YHWH Elohim of Avraham your
father, and the Elohim of Yitzchak: the land whereon you liest, to you will I give it, and to
your seed;
Gen 28:14 And your seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the
west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in you and in your seed shall all
the families of the earth be blessed.
Gen 28:15 And, behold, I am with you, and will keep you in all places where you go, and will
bring you again into this land; for I will not leave you, until I have done that which I have
spoken to you of.
Gen 28:16 And Ya’akov awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely YHWH is in this place; and
I knew it not.
Gen 28:17 And he was afraid, and said, How dreadful is this place! this is none other but the
house of Elohim, and this is the gate of heaven.

(Morning Portion)

pillows, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil upon the top of it.
Gen 28:19 And he called the name of that place Beit-El: but the name of that city was called
Luz at the first.
Gen 28:20 And Ya’akov vowed a vow, saying, If Elohim will be with me, and will keep me in this
way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on,
Gen 28:21 So that I come again to my father’s house in peace; then shall YHWH be my Elohim:
Gen 28:22 And this stone, which I have set for a pillar, shall be Elohim’s house: and of all that
you shall give me I will surely give the tenth unto you.

Reader 2 (Evening Portion)

Gen 29:1 Then Ya’akov went on his journey, and came into the land of the people of the east.
Gen 29:2 And he looked, and behold a well in the field, and, lo, there were three flocks of sheep
lying by it; for out of that well they watered the flocks: and a great stone was upon the well’s
mouth.
Gen 29:3 And there were all the flocks gathered: and they rolled the stone from the well’s
mouth, and watered the sheep, and put the stone again upon the well’s mouth in his place.

are we.

together: water you the sheep, and go and feed them.

the stone from the well’s mouth; then we water the sheep.

them.

have you beguiled me?

the firstborn.
Gen 29:27 Fulfill her week, and we will give you this also for the service which you shall serve
with me yet seven other years.

wife also.

thy son’s mandrakes.
Gen 30:15 And she said unto her, Is it a small matter that you have taken my husband? and
would you take away my son’s mandrakes also? And Rachel said, Therefore he shall lie with
you tonight for your son’s mandrakes.
Gen 30:16 And Ya’akov came out of the field in the evening, and Leah went out to meet him,
and said, You must come in unto me; for surely I have hired you with my son’s mandrakes.

you know my service which I have done you.
Gen 30:27 And Lavan said unto him, I pray you, if I have found favor in your eyes, tarry: for I
have learned by experience that YHWH has blessed me for your sake.

Reader 5 (Evening Portion)

Gen 30:28 And he said, Appoint me your wages, and I will give it.
Gen 30:29 And he said unto him, You know how I have served you, and how your cattle was
with me.
Gen 30:30 For it was little which you had before I came, and it is now increased unto a
multitude; and YHWH has blessed you since my coming: and now when shall I provide for
my own house also?
Gen 30:31 And he said, What shall I give you? And Ya’akov said, You shall not give me any
thing: if you will do this thing for me, I will again feed and keep your flock:
Gen 30:32 I will pass through all your flock today, removing from there all the speckled and
spotted cattle, and all the brown cattle among the sheep, and the spotted and speckled
among the goats: and of such shall be my hire.
Gen 30:33 So shall my righteousness answer for me in time to come, when it shall come for my
hire before your face: every one that is not speckled and spotted among the goats, and
brown among the sheep, that shall be counted stolen with me.
Gen 30:34 And Lavan said, Behold, I would it might be according to your word.
Gen 30:35 And he removed that day the he goats that were ringstreaked and spotted, and all
the she goats that were speckled and spotted, and every one that had some white in it, and
all the brown among the sheep, and gave them into the hand of his sons.
Gen 30:36 And he set three days’ journey between himself and Ya’akov: and Ya’akov fed the
rest of Lavan’s flocks.
Gen 30:37 And Ya’akov took him rods of green poplar, and of the hazel and chestnut tree; and
peeled white streaks in them, and made the white appear which was in the rods.
Gen 30:38 And he set the rods which he had peeled before the flocks in the gutters in the
watering troughs when the flocks came to drink, that they should conceive when they came
to drink.
Gen 30:39 And the flocks conceived before the rods, and brought forth cattle ringstreaked,
speckled, and spotted.
Gen 30:40 And Ya’akov did separate the lambs, and set the faces of the flocks toward the
ringstreaked, and all the brown in the flock of Lavan; and he put his own flocks by
themselves, and put them not unto Lavan’s cattle.
Gen 30:41 And it came to pass, whensoever the stronger cattle did conceive, that Ya’akov laid
the rods before the eyes of the cattle in the gutters, that they might conceive among the rods.
Gen 30:42 But when the cattle were feeble, he put them not in: so the feebler were Lavan’s, and
the stronger Ya’akov’s.
Gen 30:43 And the man increased exceedingly, and had much cattle, and maidservants, and
menservants, and camels, and donkeys.
Gen 31:1 And he heard the words of Lavan’s sons, saying, Ya’akov has taken away all that was
our father’s; and of that which was our father’s has he gotten all this glory.
Gen 31:2 And Ya’akov beheld the countenance of Lavan, and, behold, it was not toward him as
before.

(Morning Portion)

Gen 31:3 And YHWH said unto Ya’akov, Return unto the land of your fathers, and to your
kindred; and I will be with you.
Gen 31:4 And Ya’akov sent and called Rachel and Leah to the field unto his flock,
Gen 31:5 And said unto them, I see your father’s countenance, that it is not toward me as
before; but the Elohim of my father has been with me.
Gen 31:6 And you know that with all my power I have served your father.
Gen 31:7 And your father have deceived me, and changed my wages ten times; but Elohim
suffered him not to hurt me.
Gen 31:8 If he said thus, The speckled shall be your wages; then all the cattle bore speckled: and
if he said thus, The ringstreaked shall be your hire; then bore all the cattle ringstreaked.
Gen 31:9 Thus Elohim hath taken away the cattle of your father, and given them to me.
Gen 31:10 And it came to pass at the time that the cattle conceived, that I lifted up my eyes, and
saw in a dream, and, behold, the rams which leaped upon the cattle were ringstreaked,
speckled, and grizzled.
Gen 31:11 And the angel of Elohim spoke unto me in a dream, saying, Ya’akov: And I said, Here
am I.
Gen 31:12 And he said, Lift up now your eyes, and see, all the rams which leap upon the cattle
are ringstreaked, speckled, and grizzled: for I have seen all that Lavan does unto you.
Gen 31:13 I am the Elohim of Beit-El, where you anointed the pillar, and where you vowed a
vow unto me: now arise, get you out from this land, and return unto the land of your
kindred.
Gen 31:14 And Rachel and Leah answered and said unto him, Is there yet any portion or
inheritance for us in our father’s house?
Gen 31:15 Are we not counted of him strangers? for he has sold us, and has quite devoured also
our money.
Gen 31:16 For all the riches which Elohim has taken from our father, that is ours, and our
children’s: now then, whatsoever Elohim has said unto you, do.

Reader 6 (Evening Portion)

Gen 31:17 Then Ya’akov rose up, and set his sons and his wives upon camels;
Gen 31:18 And he carried away all his cattle, and all his goods which he had gotten, the cattle of
his getting, which he had gotten in Padan-aram, for to go to Yitzchak his father in the land of
Kena’an.
Gen 31:19 And Lavan went to shear his sheep: and Rachel had stolen the images that were her
father’s.
Gen 31:20 And Ya’akov stole away unawares to Lavan the Syrian, in that he told him not that he
fled.
Gen 31:21 So he fled with all that he had; and he rose up, and passed over the river, and set his
face toward the mount Gil’ad.
Gen 31:22 And it was told Lavan on the third day that Ya’akov was fled.
Gen 31:23 And he took his brethren with him, and pursued after him seven days’ journey; and
they overtook him in the mount Gil’ad.
Gen 31:24 And Elohim came to Lavan the Syrian in a dream by night, and said unto him, Take
heed that thou speak not to Ya’akov either good or bad.
Gen 31:25 Then Lavan overtook Ya’akov. Now Ya’akov had pitched his tent in the mount: and
Lavan with his brethren pitched in the mount of Gil’ad.
Gen 31:26 And Lavan said to Ya’akov, What have you done, that you have stolen away unawares
to me, and carried away my daughters, as captives taken with the sword?
Gen 31:27 Why did you flee away secretly, and steal away from me; and did not tell me, that I
might have sent you away with mirth, and with songs, with tabret, and with harp?
Gen 31:28 And have not suffered me to kiss my sons and my daughters? you have now done
foolishly in so doing.
Gen 31:29 It is in the power of my hand to do you hurt: but the Elohim of your father spoke
unto me last night, saying, Take you heed that you speak not to Ya’akov either good or bad.
Gen 31:30 And now, though you would needs be gone, because you sore longed after your
father’s house, yet why have you stolen my elohim?
Gen 31:31 And Ya’akov answered and said to Lavan, Because I was afraid: for I said,
Peradventure you would take by force your daughters from me.
Gen 31:32 With whomsoever you find your elohim, let him not live: before our brethren discern
you what is yours with me, and take it to you. For Ya’akov knew not that Rachel had stolen
them.
Gen 31:33 And Lavan went into Ya’akov’s tent, and into Leah’s tent, and into the two
maidservants’ tents; but he found them not. Then went he out of Leah’s tent, and entered
into Rachel’s tent.
Gen 31:34 Now Rachel had taken the images, and put them in the camel’s furniture, and sat
upon them. And Lavan searched all the tent, but found them not.
Gen 31:35 And she said to her father, Let it not displease my lord that I cannot rise up before
thee; for the custom of women is upon me. And he searched, but found not the images.
Gen 31:36 And Ya’akov was wroth, and chided with Lavan: and Ya’akov answered and said to
Lavan, What is my trespass? what is my sin, that you have so hotly pursued after me?
Gen 31:37 Whereas you have searched all my stuff, what have you found of all your household
stuff? set it here before my brethren and your brethren, that they may judge between us
both.
Gen 31:38 This twenty years have I been with you; your ewes and your she goats have not cast
their young, and the rams of your flock have I not eaten.
Gen 31:39 That which was torn of beasts I brought not unto you; I bore the loss of it; of my
hand did you require it, whether stolen by day, or stolen by night.
Gen 31:40 Thus I was; in the day the drought consumed me, and the frost by night; and my
sleep departed from my eyes.
Gen 31:41 Thus have I been twenty years in your house; I served you fourteen years for your
two daughters, and six years for your cattle: and you have changed my wages ten times.
Gen 31:42 Except the Elohim of my father, the Elohim of Avraham, and the fear of Yitzchak,
had been with me, surely you had sent me away now empty. Elohim has seen my affliction
and the labor of my hands, and rebuked you last night.

Reader 7 (6th Day Morning Portion)

Gen 31:43 And Lavan answered and said unto Ya’akov, These daughters are my daughters, and
these children are my children, and these cattle are my cattle, and all that you see is mine:
and what can I do this day unto these my daughters, or unto their children which they have
born?
Gen 31:44 Now therefore come you, let us make a covenant, I and you; and let it be for a
witness between me and you.
Gen 31:45 And Ya’akov took a stone, and set it up for a pillar.
Gen 31:46 And Ya’akov said unto his brethren, Gather stones; and they took stones, and made
an heap: and they did eat there upon the heap.
Gen 31:47 And Lavan called it Yegar-sahaduta: but Ya’akov called it Gal’ed.
Gen 31:48 And Lavan said, This heap is a witness between me and you this day. Therefore was
the name of it called Gal’ed;
Gen 31:49 And Mitzpah; for he said, YHWH watch between me and you, when we are absent
one from another.
Gen 31:50 If you shall afflict my daughters, or if you shall take other wives beside my
daughters, no man is with us; see, Elohim is witness between me and you.
Gen 31:51 And Lavan said to Ya’akov, Behold this heap, and behold this pillar, which I have cast
between me and you;
Gen 31:52 This heap be witness, and this pillar be witness, that I will not pass over this heap to
you, and that you shall not pass over this heap and this pillar unto me, for harm.
Gen 31:53 The Elohim of Avraham, and the Elohim of Nahor, the Elohim of their father, judge
between us. And Ya’akov swore by the fear of his father Yitzchak.
Gen 31:54 Then Ya’akov offered sacrifice upon the mount, and called his brethren to eat bread:
and they did eat bread, and tarried all night in the mount.
Gen 31:55 And early in the morning Lavan rose up, and kissed his sons and his daughters, and
blessed them: and Lavan departed, and returned unto his place.
Gen 32:1 And Ya’akov went on his way, and the angels of Elohim met him.
Gen 32:2 And when Ya’akov saw them, he said, This is Elohim’s army: and he called the name
of that place Mahanaim.
Gen 32:3 And Ya’akov sent messengers before him to Esav his brother unto the land of Se’ir,
the country of Edom.

Haftarah (Shabbat Evening Portion)

Hos 12:13 And by a prophet YHWH brought Yisra’el out of Egypt, and by a prophet was he
preserved.
Hos 12:14 Efrayim provoked him to anger most bitterly: therefore shall he leave his blood upon
him, and his reproach shall his Adonai return unto him.
Hos 13:1 When Efrayim spoke trembling, he exalted himself in Yisra’el; but when he offended
in Ba’al, he died.
Hos 13:2 And now they sin more and more, and have made them molten images of their silver,
and idols according to their own understanding, all of it the work of the craftsmen: they say
of them, Let the men that sacrifice kiss the calves.
Hos 13:3 Therefore they shall be as the morning cloud, and as the early dew that passes away,
as the chaff that is driven with the whirlwind out of the floor, and as the smoke out of the
chimney.
Hos 13:4 Yet I am YHWH your Elohim from the land of Egypt, and you shall know no El but
me: for there is no savior beside me.
Hos 13:5 I did know you in the wilderness, in the land of great drought.
Hos 13:6 According to their pasture, so were they filled; they were filled, and their heart was
exalted; therefore have they forgotten me.
Hos 13:7 Therefore I will be unto them as a lion: as a leopard by the way will I observe them:
Hos 13:8 I will meet them as a bear that is bereaved of her whelps, and will rend the caul of
their heart, and there will I devour them like a lion: the wild beast shall tear them.
Hos 13:9 O Yisra’el, you have destroyed yourself; but in me is your help.
Hos 13:10 I will be your king: where is any other that may save you in all your cities? and your
judges of whom you said, Give me a king and princes?
Hos 13:11 I gave you a king in my anger, and took him away in my wrath.
Hos 13:12 The lawlessness of Efrayim is bound up; his sin is hid.
Hos 13:13 The sorrows of a travailing woman shall come upon him: he is an unwise son; for he
should not stay long in the place of the breaking forth of children.
Hos 13:14 I will ransom them from the power of She’ol; I will redeem them from death: O
