Parashat Text with Readers and Daily Portions (Reader 1 Starts on Saturday Evening)

Vayishlach “And He Sent”
Gen32:4 – 36:43 , Hosea 12:12 – 14:10

Reader 1 (Evening Portion)

Gen 32:4 And he commanded them, saying, Thus shall you speak unto my lord Esav; Your
servant Ya’akov saith thus, I have sojourned with Lavan, and stayed there until now:
Gen 32:5 And I have oxen, and donkeys, flocks, and menservants, and womenservants: and I
have sent to tell my lord, that I may find [favor] in your sight.
Gen 32:6 And the messengers returned to Ya’akov, saying, We came to your brother Esav, and
also he comes to meet you, and four hundred men with him.

(Morning Portion)

Gen 32:7 Then Ya’akov was greatly afraid and distressed: and he divided * the people that were
with him, and the flocks, and herds, and the camels, into two bands;
Gen 32:8 And said, If Esav come to the one company, and smite it, then the other company
which is left shall escape.
Gen 32:9 And Ya’akov said, O Elohim of my father Avraham, and Elohim of my father Yitzchak,
YHWH which said unto me, Return unto your country, and to your kindred, and I will deal
well with you:
Gen 32:10 I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which you have
showed unto * your servant; for with my staff I passed over * this Yardan; and now I am
become two bands.
Gen 32:11 Deliver me, I pray you, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esav: for I fear
him, lest he will come and smite me, and the mother with the children.
Gen 32:12 And you said, I will surely do you good, and make * your seed as the sand of the sea,
which cannot be numbered for multitude.

Reader 2 (Evening Portion)

Gen 32:13 And he lodged there that same night; and took of that which came to his hand a
present for Esav his brother;
Gen 32:14 Two hundred she goats, and twenty he goats, two hundred ewes, and twenty rams,
Gen 32:15 Thirty nursing camels with their colts, forty heifers, and ten bulls, twenty she
donkeys, and ten foals.
Gen 32:16 And he delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by themselves; and
said unto his servants, Pass over before me, and put a space between drove and drove.
Gen 32:17 And he commanded * the foremost, saying, When Esav my brother meets you, and
asks you, saying, Whose are you? and where go you? and whose are these before you?
Gen 32:18 Then you shall say, They be your servant Ya’akov’s; it is a present sent unto my lord
Esav: and, behold, also he is behind us.
Gen 32:19 And so commanded he * the second, and * the third, and * all that followed the
droves, saying, On this manner shall you speak unto Esav, when you find him.
Gen 32:20 And say you moreover, Behold, your servant Ya’akov is behind us. For he said, I will
appease him with the present that goes before me, and afterward I will see his face;
peradventure he will accept of me.
Gen 32:21 So went the present over before him: and himself lodged that night in the company.

(Morning Portion)

Gen 32:22 And he rose up that night, and took * his two wives, and his two womenservants,
and his eleven sons, and passed over * the ford Yavok.
Gen 32:23 And he took them, and sent them over * the brook, and sent over * that he had.
Gen 32:24 And Ya’akov was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of
the day.
Gen 32:25 And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his
thigh; and the hollow of Ya’akov’s thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.
Gen 32:26 And he said, Let me go, for the day breaks. And he said, I will not let you go, except
you bless me.
Gen 32:27 And he said unto him, What is your name? And he said, Ya’akov.
Gen 32:28 And he said, Your name shall be called no more Ya’akov, but Yisra’el: for as a prince
have you power with Elohim and with men, and have prevailed.
Gen 32:29 And Ya’akov asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray you, your name. And he said, Why
is it that you do ask after my name? And he blessed him there.

Reader 3 (Evening Portion)

Gen 32:30 And Ya’akov called the name of the place Peni’el: for I have seen Elohim face to face,
and my life is preserved.
Gen 32:31 And as he passed over * Peni’el the sun rose upon him, and he halted upon his thigh.
Gen 32:32 Therefore the children of Yisra’el eat not * the sinew which shrank, which is upon
the hollow of the thigh, unto this day: because he touched the hollow of Ya’akov’s thigh in
the sinew that shrank.
Gen 33:1 And Ya’akov lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, Esav came, and with him four
hundred men. And he divided * the children unto Le’ah, and unto Rachel, and unto the two
handmaids.

(Morning Portion)

Gen 33:2 And he put * the handmaids and their children foremost, and Le’ah and her children
after, and Rachel and Yosef hindmost.
Gen 33:3 And he passed over before them, and bowed himself to the ground seven times, until
he came near to his brother.
Gen 33:4 And Esav ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck, and kissed him:
and they wept.
Gen 33:5 And he lifted up * his eyes, and saw * the women and the children; and said, Who are
those with you? And he said, The children which Elohim has graciously given * your servant.

Reader 4 (Evening Portion)

Gen 33:6 Then the handmaidens came near, they and their children, and they bowed
themselves.
Gen 33:7 And Le’ah also with her children came near, and bowed themselves: and after came
Yosef near and Rachel, and they bowed themselves.
Gen 33:8 And he said, What mean you by all this drove which I met? And he said, These are to
find [favor] in the sight of my lord.
Gen 33:9 And Esav said, I have enough, my brother; keep that you have unto yourself.
Gen 33:10 And Ya’akov said, Nay, I pray you, if now I have found [favor] in your sight, then
receive my present at my hand: for therefore I have seen your face, as though I had seen the
face of Elohim, and you were pleased with me.
Gen 33:11 Take, I pray you, * my blessing that is brought to you; because Elohim has dealt
graciously with me, and because I have enough. And he urged him, and he took it.
Gen 33:12 And he said, Let us take our journey, and let us go, and I will go before you.
Gen 33:13 And he said unto him, My lord knows that the children are tender, and the flocks
and herds with young are with me: and if men should overdrive them one day, all the flock
will die.
Gen 33:14 Let my lord, I pray you, pass over before his servant: and I will lead on softly,
according as the [work] that goes before me and the children be able to endure, until I come
unto my lord unto Se’ir.
Gen 33:15 And Esav said, Let me now leave with you some of the folk that are with me. And he
said, [Why is that]? let me find [favor] in the sight of my lord.
Gen 33:16 So Esav returned that day on his way unto Se’ir.

(Morning Portion)

Gen 33:17 And Ya’akov journeyed to Sukkot, and built him a house, and made booths for his
[livestock]: therefore the name of the place is called Sukkot.
Gen 33:18 And Ya’akov came to Shalom, a city of Shechem, which is in the land of Kena’an,
when he came from Padan-aram; and pitched his tent * before the city.
Gen 33:19 And he bought * a parcel of a field, where he had spread his tent, at the hand of the
children of Hamor, Shechem’s father, for a hundred pieces of money.
Gen 33:20 And he erected there an altar, and called it El-elohe-Yisra’el.

Reader 5 (Evening Portion)

Gen 34:1 And Dinah the daughter of Le’ah, which she bore unto Ya’akov, went out to see the
daughters of the land.
Gen 34:2 And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hiv’vi, prince of the country, saw her, he
took her, and lay with her, and defiled her.
Gen 34:3 And his soul cleaved unto Dinah the daughter of Ya’akov, and he loved * the damsel,
and spoke kindly unto the damsel.
Gen 34:4 And Shechem spoke unto his father Hamor, saying, Get me * this damsel to wife.
Gen 34:5 And Ya’akov heard that he had defiled * Dinah his daughter: now his sons were with
his cattle in the field: and Ya’akov held his peace until they were come.
Gen 34:6 And Hamor the father of Shechem went out unto Ya’akov to commune with him.
Gen 34:7 And the sons of Ya’akov came out of the field when they heard it: and the men were
grieved, and they were very wroth, because he had wrought folly in Yisra’el in lying with *
Ya’akov’s daughter; which thing ought not to be done.
Gen 34:8 And Hamor communed with them, saying, The soul of my son Shechem longs for
your daughter: I pray you give her him to wife.
Gen 34:9 And make you marriages with us, and give your daughters unto us, and take our
daughters unto you.
Gen 34:10 And you shall dwell with us: and the land shall be before you; dwell and trade you
therein, and get you possessions therein.
Gen 34:11 And Shechem said unto her father and unto her brethren, Let me find [favor] in your
eyes, and what you shall say unto me I will give.
Gen 34:12 Ask me never so much dowry and gift, and I will give according as you shall say unto
me: but give me * the damsel to wife.
Gen 34:13 And the sons of Ya’akov answered * Shechem and Hamor his father deceitfully, and
said, because he had defiled * Dinah their sister:
Gen 34:14 And they said unto them, We cannot do this thing, to give * our sister to one that is
uncircumcised; for that were a reproach unto us:
Gen 34:15 But in this will we consent unto you: If you will be as we are, that every male of you
be circumcised;
Gen 34:16 Then will we give * our daughters unto you, and we will take your daughters to us,
and we will dwell with you, and we will become one people.
Gen 34:17 But if you will not hearken unto us, to be circumcised; then will we take * our
daughter, and we will be gone.
Gen 34:18 And their words pleased Hamor, and Shechem Hamor’s son.
Gen 34:19 And the young man deferred not to do the thing, because he had delight in Ya’akov’s
daughter: and he was more honorable than all the house of his father.
Gen 34:20 And Hamor and Shechem his son came unto the gate of their city, and communed
with the men of their city, saying,
Gen 34:21 These men are peaceable with us; therefore let them dwell in the land, and trade
therein; for the land, behold, it is large enough for them; let us take * their daughters to us
for wives, and let us give them our daughters.
Gen 34:22 Only herein will the men consent unto us for to dwell with us, to be one people, if
every male among us be circumcised, as they are circumcised.
Gen 34:23 Shall not their [livestock] and their substance and every beast of theirs be ours? only
let us consent unto them, and they will dwell with us.
Gen 34:24 And unto Hamor and unto Shechem his son hearkened all that went out of the gate
of his city; and every male was circumcised, all that went out of the gate of his city.

(Morning Portion)

Gen 34:25 And it came to pass on the third day, when they were sore, that two of the sons of
Ya’akov, Shim’on and Levi, Dinah’s brethren, took each man his sword, and came upon the
city boldly, and slew all the males.
Gen 34:26 And they slew Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the sword, and took *
Dinah out of Shechem’s house, and went out.
Gen 34:27 The sons of Ya’akov came upon the slain, and spoiled the city, because they had
defiled their sister.
Gen 34:28 They took * their sheep, and their oxen, and their donkeys, and that which was in
the city, and that which was in the field,
Gen 34:29 And all their wealth, and all their little ones, and their wives took they captive, and
spoiled even all that was in the house.
Gen 34:30 And Ya’akov said to Shim’on and Levi, You have troubled me to make me to stink
among the inhabitants of the land, among the Kena’ani and the Perizzi: and I being few in
number, they shall gather themselves together against me, and slay me; and I shall be
destroyed, I and my house.
Gen 34:31 And they said, Should he deal with * our sister as with a harlot?
Gen 35:1 And Elohim said unto Ya’akov, Arise, go up to Beit’el, and dwell there: and make there
an altar unto Elohim, that appeared unto you when you fled from the face of Esav your
brother.
Gen 35:2 Then Ya’akov said unto his household, and to all that were with him, Put away * the
strange Elohim that are among you, and be clean, and change your garments:
Gen 35:3 And let us arise, and go up to Beit’el; and I will make there an altar unto Elohim, who
answered me in the day of my distress, and was with me in the way which I went.
Gen 35:4 And they gave unto Ya’akov * all the strange Elohim which were in their hand, and all
their earrings which were in their ears; and Ya’akov hid them under the oak which was by
Shechem.
Gen 35:5 And they journeyed: and the terror of Elohim was upon the cities that were round
about them, and they did not pursue after the sons of Ya’akov.
Gen 35:6 So Ya’akov came to Luz, which is in the land of Kena’an, that is, Beit’el, he and all the
people that were with him.
Gen 35:7 And he built there an altar, and called the place El-beit’el: because there Elohim
appeared unto him, when he fled from the face of his brother.
Gen 35:8 But Devorah Rivkah’s nurse died, and she was buried beneath Beit’el under an oak:
and the name of it was called Allon-bachut.
Gen 35:9 And Elohim appeared unto Ya’akov again, when he came out of Padan-aram, and
blessed him.
Gen 35:10 And Elohim said unto him, Your name is Ya’akov: your name shall not be called
anymore Ya’akov, but Yisra’el shall be your name: and He called * his name Yisra’el.
Gen 35:11 And Elohim said unto him, I am El Shaddai: be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a
company of nations shall be of you, and kings shall come out of your loins;

Reader 6 (Evening Portion)

Gen 35:12 And the land which I gave Avraham and Yitzchak, to you I will give it, and to your
seed after you will I give * the land.
Gen 35:13 And Elohim went up from him in the place where He talked with him.
Gen 35:14 And Ya’akov set up a pillar in the place where he talked with Him, a pillar of stone,
and he poured a drink offering thereon, and he poured oil thereon.
Gen 35:15 And Ya’akov called * the name of the place where Elohim spoke with him, Beit’el.
Gen 35:16 And they journeyed from Beit’el; and there was but a little way to come to Efrat: and
Rachel travailed, and she had hard labor.
Gen 35:17 And it came to pass, when she was in hard labor, that the midwife said unto her, Fear
not; you shall have this son also.
Gen 35:18 And it came to pass, as her soul was in departing, (for she died) that she called his

day.
Gen 35:21 And Yisra’el journeyed, and spread his tent beyond the tower of Edar.
Gen 35:22 And it came to pass, when Yisra’el dwelt in that land, that Re’uven went and lay with
Bilhah his father’s concubine: and Yisra’el heard. Now the sons of Ya’akov were twelve:
Gen 35:23 The sons of Le’ah; Re’uven, Ya’akov’s firstborn, and Shim’on, and Levi, and
Yahudah, and Yissakhar, and Zevulun:

Gen 35:28 And the days of Yitzchak were a hundred and eighty years.
Gen 35:29 And Yitzchak gave up the spirit, and died, and was gathered unto his people, being
old and full of days: and his sons Esav and Ya’akov buried him.

Haftarah (Shabbat Evening Portion)

Hos 11:7 And my people are bent to backsliding from me: though they called them to the most
High, none at all would exalt him.
Hos 11:8 How shall I give you up, Efrayim? how shall I deliver you, Yisra’el? how shall I make
you as Admah? how shall I set you as Tzevoyim? my heart is turned within me, my
repentings are kindled together.
Hos 11:9 I will not execute the fierceness of my anger, I will not return to destroy Efrayim: for I
am Elohim, and not man; the Holy One in the midst of you: and I will not enter into the city.
Hos 11:10 They shall walk after YHWH: He shall roar like a lion: when He shall roar, then the
children shall tremble from the west.
Hos 11:11 They shall tremble as a bird out of Mitzrayim, and as a dove out of the land of Assyria:
and I will place them in their houses, saith YHWH.
Hos 11:12 Efrayim compassed me about with lies, and the house of Yisra’el with deceit: but
Yahudah yet rules with Elohim, and is faithful with the saints.
Hos 12:1 Efrayim feeds on wind, and follows after the east wind: he daily increases lies and
desolation; and they do make a covenant with the Assyrians, and oil is carried into
Mitzrayim.
Hos 12:2 YHWH has also a controversy with Yahudah, and will punish Ya’akov according to his
ways; according to his doings will He recompense him.
Hos 12:3 [He took the heel * of his brother] in the womb, and by his strength he had power
with Elohim:
Hos 12:4 Yea, he had power over the angel, and prevailed: he wept, and made supplication unto
him: he found him in Beit’el, and there he spoke with us;
Hos 12:5 Even YHWH Elohim Tzeva’ot; YHWH is His memorial.
Hos 12:6 Therefore turn you to your Elohim: keep mercy and judgment, and wait on your
Elohim continually.
Hos 12:7 He is a merchant, the balances of deceit are in his hand: he loves to oppress.
Hos 12:8 And Efrayim said, Yet I am become rich, I have found me out substance: in all my
labors they shall find no lawlessness in me that is sin.
Hos 12:9 And I that am YHWH your Elohim from the land of Mitzrayim will yet make you to
dwell in tabernacles, as in the days of the solemn feast.
Hos 12:10 I have also spoken by the prophets, and I have multiplied visions, and used
similitudes, by the ministry of the prophets.
Hos 12:11 Is there lawlessness in Gil’ad? surely they are vanity: they sacrifice bullocks in Gilgal;
